The COVID-19 pandemic tested our resilience as a community and as caregivers. It taught us the true meaning of compassion—not just for those we serve, but for those who serve alongside us.

In 2019, one of our caregivers tested positive for COVID-19. At the time, standard protocol required a two-week quarantine before returning to work. We reached out to her to explain the requirements and reassure her that her job was secure. However, as soon as we mentioned the quarantine, she broke down in tears.

Through her sobs, she explained: “I live in a one-bedroom home with my three kids and my grandparents. My grandpa has health issues. Where will I quarantine? If I go home, my grandpa might get sick and could die. I have nowhere to go.”

Her words hit me hard. Here was someone who had dedicated herself to caring for others, now facing a situation where no one could care for her. In that moment, I realized that if we expect our caregivers to provide love and compassion, we must lead by example.

Without hesitation, we booked her a hotel room for two weeks. Her aunt delivered meals daily. It was a small gesture, but it meant the world to her. She completed her quarantine and returned to work with renewed strength.

We were all navigating uncharted waters. There was no script, no prior experience to guide us, and no established guidelines to follow. But one principle guided us: our unwavering commitment to doing what was best for our caregivers and clients.

That moment inspired a broader initiative: Caring for the Caregivers. We delivered groceries, fresh produce, and care packages to their homes or workplaces. We called them daily, not just to check on their work but to ask about their families, fears, and well-being. We provided training, emotional support, and most importantly, a sense of connection.

It took our entire team working together to get through those tough times. Together, we turned compassion into action.

Today, I carry this lesson with me: care begins with the caregivers. By supporting and uplifting those who dedicate their lives to serving others, we create a ripple effect of compassion. It’s a responsibility we embrace with gratitude and humility every single day.
